The victim, identified as 39-year-old Jason Carter of Haiku, was surfing at Paia Bay when he encountered a shark around 9 a.m., the Maui Police Department said in a news release. Ocean Safety officers responded to the scene and brought Carter to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

The type and size of the shark were not confirmed, but witnesses reported seeing a large tiger shark in the area, according to Hawaii News Now.

This was the second fatal shark attack in Hawaii this year, and the sixth shark attack overall. The first fatality occurred in May, when a 65-year-old California man was bitten by a shark near Ka'anapali Beach Park on Maui.

Shark warning signs were posted along the shoreline after the incident and will remain until further notice, officials said.
