History never moves in a straight line; it moves in cycles. Right now, the United States stands at the edge of one of the most dangerous cycles in modern history—one eerily reminiscent of the breakdown of democratic institutions in the early 20th century.
For years, Trump's 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) movement has been framed as a unified force, driven by a shared vision of nationalism, power, and anti-establishment fervor. However, history tells us that movements built on temporary alliances and mutual convenience eventually implode.
The collapse won’t happen overnight. If history is any indication, it will begin with an uneasy power-sharing agreement, where each faction consolidates control before inevitable betrayals occur. This pattern was evident in Nazi Germany, where Hitler initially relied on traditional conservatives before eliminating them, and in Stalin’s USSR, where power struggles within the Communist Party ended with purges. The United States may be on a similar trajectory.
Germany and Italy embraced authoritarianism under the guise of nationalist renewal. Chile’s military dictatorship emerged from a right-wing coup enabled by economic elites. Argentina’s fascist Peronist movement courted both the Catholic Church and militant right-wing enforcers before ultimately falling apart. Romania’s Iron Guard collapsed due to infighting between its own leaders. These cases suggest that the MAGA movement’s internal divisions could lead to its own undoing.
