Nov. 12, 2023 (Bing) -- Iceland is preparing for a volcanic eruption in the southwest of the island in the coming days. The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) has been providing continuous updates on the potential disaster.

The reasons for the potential eruption include:

  • A series of earthquakes
  • Evidence of magma spreading rapidly underground
  • A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit the area
  • The Blue Lagoon geothermal resort temporarily closed
The fishing town of Grindavik has been evacuated, and experts warn of potential heavy damage to the town and nearby tourist destinations.

The Icelandic Met Office said that based on observations, there is a "significant likelihood" of a volcanic eruption in the coming days.

Iceland erupts on average every 5 years, with around three-quarters of eruptions producing ash.
